OCR: Si-ma Qian Writing Shi Ji in Disgrace Si-ma Qian was a court historian during the reign of the Em- peror Han Wu-di, who wrote Shi Ji (Records of the Grand Historian) , the first history book of biographical writing. In 99 BC Si-ma Qian was subjected to the punishment of castration and thrown into prison by Emperor Han Wu-di for defending a general who was forced to surrender to the Huns. Such untold misery almost drove him to commit suicide. Nevertheless, subsequent to this disgrace, he occupied himself with the completion of historical undertakings. It took him 13 yers.
